About the NYAC
We are the New York Artists Circle (NYAC), a group of professional visual artists who connect to share information, opportunities and resources. For over 20 years we have built a collective bank of expertise through monthly meetings, an active listserve, a dynamic social media presence, and a group website. We support our members in their professional growth, fostering groundbreaking ideas, fresh approaches and innovative collaborations. Working together in community helps us to meet the challenges we face in our solo practices, proving that there is strength in numbers!
NYAC artists have an amazingly diverse range of artistic visions and expressions, styles, mediums and themes. This variety of work is our strength. Exhibiting and selling artwork are priorities, along with sharing our skills and knowledge.
Our members exhibit regularly in galleries and museums around the world, participate in art fairs, win grants and prizes, organize open studio events and sit on the boards of arts organizations.
We invite Curators, Gallerists, Art Dealers and Collectors, Academics and the Public to browse through our searchable registry to find artists for exhibitions, collaborations and other opportunities. Prominent curators have created both online and “brick and mortar” exhibitions by selecting work from our website, and many of our artists have received commissions.
We are passionate about education. Some of us teach art and some are art coaches, docents, curators and consultants. Some have ancillary art-related careers and advocacies, attend art conferences and art residencies. All are experienced professionals. We give back. We interact with personal, societal and world issues through art.
We highlight our art community and its social engagement with an active Instagram and Facebook presence (@nyartistscircle). We are excited to introduce a new NYAC website in 2020, 12 years after we posted our first site.
During monthly meetings, members exchange art business information and opportunities, but also the successes, failures and pitfalls inherent in the business of art. Our guiding spirit of cooperation has led to community, collegiality and personal relationships that are hugely rewarding.
Guest speakers have included Michael Royce, executive director of NYFA; internationally known author and artist-advocate, Caroll Michels; and Michael Golden, founder of Golden Paints.
How We Grow
The NYAC grows by invitation from the existing membership.
The NYAC was founded in 1993 by artist and arts educator, Barbara Ellmann. Through word of mouth we have grown to over 300 members. After Barbara Ellmann stepped down as the group’s leader in 2015, a Steering Committee was formed to manage administrative efforts, create programming and direct the NYAC going forward. Members take turns chairing the monthly general meetings. The NYAC is unincorporated.
Contact artists directly through their individual profiles in our searchable registry for sales and other professional inquiries.
For general inquiries, our Steering Committee can be reached through the Contact Page.
Current Steering Committee members: Marianne Barcellona, Fran Beallor, Lois Bender, Yvette Cohen, Norma Greenwood, Eileen Hoffman, Gwyneth Leech, Ellen Pliskin, Peggi Pugh, Regina Silvers and Geoffrey Stein. Members are all volunteers. Christina Saj manages our listserve.
ClearDev designed, built and maintains our website. The NYAC website, which originally launched in 2008, is promoted each year in the August “Collectors” edition of Art in America. Through outreach to new audiences, we expand our circles, knowing that one thing leads to another in connecting our work to the public.
