Album Description
"This project evolved as I chose to pursue a shift in my work habits, in order to stimulate change, growth and focus. I have limited shape and size and am working toward sustained production for this collection over 40 days. A forty day cycle is associated with a variety of cultures and contexts. In Biblical scripture it often symbolizes a period of testing, trial or probation. It is a mystical number that is said to allow for transformation, renewal, repair or rebirth. It is understood that it takes 20 days to break old habits and 20 days to make new ones, calling to mind practices associated with everything from diets to yoga or recovery. These recent works aims to fuse the spiritual impulse with slow & steady everyday rhythms. By drawing on inspiration from cross cultural traditions, I hope to distill essence that speaks to commonly understood motifs and patterns assimilated from ceramic tiles, textiles, embroidery, and lace that have become part of my subconscious vocabulary. Because of my Ukrainian heritage, I associate with a visual tradition rich in geometry, symbolism and color found in labor intensive patterning associated with ethnic embroidery and traditional easter egg decoration. These influences are the framework on which I build my pictures with evocative patterns and shapes creating the rhythms in my paintings."
